Senegal: Teachers' pay strike enter second week
Thu. May 15, 2008 03:54 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -

(SomaliNet) After talks broke down between unions and the authorities, a pay strike by primary and secondary school teachers in Senegal entered a second week on Wednesday, teacher representatives said.

Co-ordinator Mariam Sakho Dansoko said, marches were planned in the Senegalese capital Dakar and other areas for Wednesday by the main labour federation comprising 17 teachers' unions which called a 10-day strike on May 6.

she said it was decided to press ahead with the demonstrations after negotiations with the government broke down on Tuesday evening when a section of the union federation walked out during a row over the amount of compensation teachers receive for research and lodging.

Gougna Niang, who represents one of the unions that remained at the table, said part of the federation did not consider research compensation to be a focal issue.

"It was necessary to listen to the government on the other points," Niang said.

Teachers are demanding an increase in their lodging allowance from 60 000 to 150 000 FCFA (about R1 083,76 to R2 709,39).

The federation boycotted examinations for 10 days at the beginning of April, following several work stoppages since the start of the year by teachers complaining of poor working and living conditions.-AFP
