Egypt: 10 people killed in motor accident in Egypt Mon. August 18, 2008 07:54 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -
(SomaliNet) Egypt’s state-run Middle East News Agency (MENA) said a minibus rammed into the back of a truck carrying steel bars north of Cairo on Sunday, killing 10 people, including a three-year-old boy, and injuring 11.
According to MENA, all the injured were in critical condition and have been moved to hospitals in the Delta town of Benha, where the accident occurred.
Police said the minibus driver was driving at high speed and lost control of the vehicle, which veered and slammed into the truck, MENA reported.
Reckless driving, lax traffic rules and poor road conditions lead to a high accident toll in Egypt.
A series of crashes in recent years caused a public outcry over the government's record of road and transport safety. A new traffic code with tougher punishments for lawbreakers came into effect at the start of August.-Reuters
