Zimbabwe: Opposition leader hopeful deal will be reached soon Wed. October 15, 2008 08:47 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -
(SomaliNet) An agreement could be reached on Wednesday in talks on saving a month-old power-sharing deal with Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai said.
Tsvangirai spoke to reporters as he arrived at a Harare hotel for a second day of talks mediated by former South African president Thabo Mbeki, aimed at reviving the faltering accord on forming a unity government.
Tsvangirai, when asked if an agreement would be reached on Wednesday, said: "Let's hope. We are still negotiating."
South Africa’s Mbeki brokered the original deal calling for 84-year-old Mugabe to remain as president while Tsvangirai takes the new post of prime minister.
But the deal has floundered over disputes on how to divide cabinet posts, with Tsvangirai threatening to pull out after Mugabe announced last weekend that he would give his own party the most important portfolios.-AFP
