Somalia: District official dies in Jowhar hospital after being shot by gunmen Thu. July 24, 2008 05:19 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -
(SomaliNet) After being wounded by unidentified gunmen late Wednesday afternoon while in his car, and taken to Jowhar district hospital, reports coming from southern Somalia, confirm that the Aden Yabal District commissioner is dead.
Witnesses said the gunmen, who were armed with pistols, escaped after killing the commissioner. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
This is not the first time that a government official has been targeted in Middle Shabelle Region.
Over 16 district commissioners/officials were killed in Somalia by suspected islamist groups mainly in Somali capital Mogadishu.
Ethiopian and Somali government forces come under daily attack in the Somali capital.
Somalia has not had a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew Dictator Mohamed Siad Barre and turned on each other.
The current conflict is complicated by the involvement of arch enemies Eritrea and Ethiopia, who support the opposing sides, and a complicated web of clan loyalties.-Mareeg online
